Between camp and cute. Designing queer exhibitions
Anyone who has visited the exhibition KATZEN! may recall the pink cat sofa, the fluffy plush wall, or the leopard-print curtain. Such design elements point to cultural meanings that have changed over time. Camp aesthetics also play a role here; according to Susan Sontag, they deliberately employ exaggeration and artificiality and have been particularly shaped by queer culture. In a conversation, the designers discuss this unique exhibition design with the curator. They offer insights into their ideas and the cultural references of the exhibition design—from camp aesthetics to questions of queerness and identity.
