Pink Benin Rider
Starting in June, the exhibition Benin. Stolen History will feature the work Pink Benin Rider (2025) by the emerging Nigerian artist Modupeola Fadugba, which was donated to MARKK at the beginning of the year. The starting point for Pink Benin Rider is a historical equestrian figure from the Benin Museum, which the artist transforms into a new visual language. In this conversation, Fadugba offers insights into her artistic practice, which engages with the legacy of the Kingdom of Benin and the tradition of bronze casting. In the context of the international significance of Benin art and current restitution processes, female artists in Nigeria are increasingly taking up this legacy. Fadugba’s work is a striking example of this. Her works combine historical references with contemporary issues and reflect on the relationship between past and present.
