Designing the future: plans for the markk
As part of the Hamburg Architecture Summer, renowned architect Lina Ghotmeh—who is designing the museum’s modernization in collaboration with BIWERMAU Architects (Hamburg)—will present the initial plans. She will then speak with Barbara Plankensteiner about the project’s key objectives and offer fascinating insights into the ongoing transformation process. The museum building, completed in 1912 by Albert Erbe in the late Art Nouveau style, is now undergoing a comprehensive modernization that also includes a redesign of the permanent exhibition. The project is scheduled to be completed with the museum’s reopening at the end of 2031. The Hamburg Architecture Summer, which takes place every three years at various locations throughout the city, offers a significant platform for engaging with architecture, urban development, and social change, and this year’s theme is “The Festival of Building Culture.”
